Progressing

There is not a whole lot of news to put out there but progress is being made!

Graphs – When dealing with people on a LAN statistics is nice to have. So I have been working on getting a nice dashboard working so we can monitor LAN health during events. I have finally got something started and it looks beautiful and I am very excited to implement it into the LAN in a box stack. More than likely we will eventually build an ESXI machine and run the dashboard as a virtual machine as well as some others.

The intent as stated above is to gather statistics and to see issues before they become problems. This will also allow us to publish the stats after an event and compare over time. Have a 120 person LAN event like our GALP is impressive by itself but being able to tell people how many devices were supported and how much bandwidth we went through is even better.

LAN in a Box – Looking over the equipment we can roughly support around 100 people. By Senshicon we hope to be able to support 300 people. I will also be changing the port layout of the router. Warning technical stuff ahead. Right now I have three ports dedicated to three different subnets, two for gamers and one for streamers. Issues with doing it that way is since we have 4 WAN ports you could saturate a gaming port if you have too many people one one subnet. Another issue is if we do split gamers on the two subnets then people on one subnet wont be able to see people on the other subnet for local games. So my plan is to aggregate the two gamer ports and move the subnet to a 172 subnet from a 192 subnet giving us 56K possible devices instead of 256 (508 technically with two subnets and subtracting host and network address). I will leave the streaming port alone.

To those who are less techy it just means less lag when there are 200+ people on the network.

Moving into the distant future more than likely next year if things keep getting bigger I want to replace the core switch with a 10GB switch and buy edge switches that have 24 ports at 1GB and 10GB uplinks. This will allow us to support LANs that are in the 700+ people. This would also mean upgrading the LAN ports in the router with 10GB ports and aggregating two of those for better WAN to LAN transport.

I will have future posts where I detail the LAN in a box builds for you. I am a very visual person and I also like to see other peoples projects, I hope you like mine!

Business – With all the events going on the business details may have looked like it kind of took a back seat but I am still working that end as well. Hopefully in March I will presenting at the Million Cups meeting where there will hopefully be investors and mentors there. Obviously I need to make sure all my documents are nice and organized and presentation is on point. Its easy to have a general discussion with someone about Warehouse 49 and explain it but to present it is another ballgame.

With LAN parties we love throwing them but it costs a lot of money. Now we want to throw the GALP for free every year but in order for us to keep on our goal of opening an establishment we need to also make some money. With that we are going to try to host events that have a small cover charge, nothing crazy but just enough to cover our costs and some. The point is to prove even further that our business model is feasible even without liquor. This also gives us more money to throw at the GALP to grow it bigger and better. Could you imagine a 500+ person LAN party? A LAN party that size would also generate a lot for charity which we love supporting as much as we can.

I am going to see if we can market the LAN in a Box idea for birthdays and other parties to try to generate even more revenue for events. The idea is that we could bring in the setup for as many people as power allows for parties and guests bring in their setups and play. Pretty much the definition of a LAN party but more private.

Again our goals for this would be to turn the LAN in a Box into a sustainable project, be able to upgrade the equipment and total number of gamers we could support, and to be able to throw bigger and better LAN parties.
